Yarn News

Hello there! I hope you are well. I'm writing to you today on a very wet and dark early Saturday evening. Brrrh, it's cold. Teen 1 bought the pretty flowers on show today, they've lasted a few days already. Both the teens have been digging outside today, yes I was shocked too! I'd been wanting a raised bed removing from a border for quite a while. It seemed a good idea at the time, with paving slabs either side of it for easy weeding access. Being close to the boundary hedge, any rainfall and composting goodness was whisked away by the hedge.

We've grown potatoes on the opposite side of the garden before, under the trees and close to the hedge. The potatoes too failed to grow a great crop, I think that's why we tried the opposite side of the garden. It's completely gone now, all wood removed and been dug over. I'm not sure what's going back in there but it can't be too big as the washing line is above the border. The whole border needs a jolly good weed & digging over properly.

The Land Rover lover and I have been sorting some tubs in the garden. We're in the process of tidying them - emptying them out and putting fresh compost in from the compost bin. Salvaging any plants, bulbs and seeds from the seed box, we hope to smarten it all up. We've bought some bedding plants for the smaller pots - Busy Lizzies and French Marigolds that are looking very cheerful, near the hanging baskets.

Yarn Update

Noticing that I've too many projects on the go at the moment, I thought it'd be a good idea to write a quick list and get some finished. (K & N... Knit & Natter)

1) Cardigan - Finish back - done
2) Haggis - K & N for craft festival - done
3) Amigurumi - K & N Challenge - Stormtrooper started
4) Sock - Unpick and re-do (too big - more suited to Nora Batty)
5) Dishcloth - Start for craft on the go
6) Scarf or Shawl - Start for craft on the go
7) Cardigan - Back to it
8) Embroidery - Find materials for next K & N challenge

**************
Maybe I need to look at these lists more often as looking at the list (for Yoda - link below), I've noticed 3 more things on that list that haven't been finished... still!

A) Crochet a Reindeer
B) Table mats (quilted) - finish hemming the edges
C) Jumper - finish knitting

At Knit & Natter, we've challenged ourselves to try some Amigurumi. You may remember I crocheted a Yoda (below and Jan 2018), this particular Star Wars kit has the materials to make 2 characters - Yoda and a Stormtrooper. I'm going to have to start reading the pattern through properly before I start anything in future. First of all, the 'little' stormtrooper had a big head, then I did an extra row in black yarn. Phew, he's ok now and hopefully he won't need unpicking again.

Have you eaten Haggis before. and did you like it?

Bye for now, take care

  1. It sounds like you've been keeping busy and it's good to read you've put the teens to good use.
The weather has been pretty grim recently hasn't it? We've been getting out when we can, although our garden is not looking at it's best at the moment. Roll on summer!
I always enjoy seeing your makes. The shade of those washcloths is fabulous and that haggis. So cute! I managed to finish the jumper for Lily. I was expecting it to take ages when, in fact, I completed it within a week. It provided me with a great respite from studying. X

    1. Thanks Jules, glad to hear you've managed to get out when you can, we've had warm sun but plenty of rain too this weekend. Pleased that knitting a jumper has helped you to take a break from studying. Balance seems to be so important and quite the buzz word at the moment, Cathy x

  2. You're lucky having teens who will help in the garden. I remember when we took on our allotment, my two were so enthusiastic but that soon wore off. Awww, how cute is Yoda, you've done a great job with him.

  3. You've got quite a list of little projects there Cathy. I made an amigurami rabbit when my daughter was pregnant with my granddaughter , haven't done any since. Yours looks great. Loving the pink sweater knitting, very colourful. I have a few Jean Greenhowe pattern books that belonged to my late mother in law.

    1. Thanks Julie. My list has too many items on it. There are a few more things on another list too but... concentrating on this one first. Slowly but surely I want these all ticked off. I've made quite a few Jean Greenhowe's patterns years ago, Cx

  4. We are having a relaxing but productive weekend. I’ve weeded the flower beds, my teens were elsewhere. The weather was perfect for weeding, grey and cool. I like your storm trooper. You reminded me I have a half finished R2-D2. I usually work on one or two projects at a time. If I have too many projects I get very stressed. Nope, I’ve never tried haggis.

    1. Arh bless you Lisa, I'm really not keen on having so many projects hanging over me. I love it when I can tick some off. I want to start a new crochet blanket in September and have the yarn all ready but...no! I need to finish some more things first. All the best with R2-D2, Cathy x

  5. Interesting daisies. With green centers. The daisies I have seen, all have a yellow center, like my Icon Pic. :-)

The flowers you are planning on, sound delightful. Here, we are getting patio pot flowers in, little by little. When we have a nice day, we plant some. Then more rain, and we can't. Interesting spring.

    1. Thanks W of W, supermarkets sell some strange varieties of plants and flowers. With huge buying powers I'm sure they can have whatever they wish. I'm sadly not an expert on plants, so I can't say either way. Your one on your icon is very pretty, Cathy x

  6. That is quite the project list, I generally have several on the go too. Yes, I have tasted Haggis and quite enjoy it particularly the pomp and ceromony of it on Burns night.

    1. It can be overwhelming having too many projects on the go at once. I think 3 is my ideal - knitting, crochet and maybe something that needs sewing in some way.
Incidentally the word overwhelming - I've noticed 'younger people' say 'Overwhelm' or 'you have overwhelm' or you get 'overwhelm.
I must be getting old - it just sounds weird to me, Cx

  7. I'm impressed with all your garden endeavors! And lots of handiwork progress, too. Your little Yoda turned out adorable.

    How's your weekend?
We're still in ours, today if Father's Day and the kids are coming over and making dinner.

Have you a project list building up, or do you finish one at a time?
I stick with a major one and maybe a side one or two.

Have you eaten Haggis before. and did you like it?
No.. and I don't think I will try it. LOL!

    1. Thanks Teresa, nice that the kids cooked dinner for you all. The teens did breakfast for their Dad, cut the grass and made several cups of tea. Your project list is more sensible than mine, well done. Cx

  8. my weekend was awesome, and I did a lot of painting knitting and reading! I'm trying my best to make time for what I love to do and ignore what doesn't fill my bucket. Love your projects and the Amigurumi are cute!!

  9. That is quite a list! I've been very good and trying to concentrate on just one of my projects at the moment. I'm slightly successful! I won't even begin to describe my yard as I hate gardening so things are a little 'natural' shall we say. I'm in awe with what your family have managed to achieve. xx Susan

    1. I think the novelty with the teens has worn thin now. I'm not keen on gardening really but it needs sorting, so a bit at a time and who knows, we might just improve it. I really need to have only one thing on the go at once too, but with Knit & Natter - simple is better than complicated and it's always good to have a non-complicated project for grab and go times, eg travel or appointments, Cx

  10. I have a mental list of things I am working on. I'm in the middle of crocheting a blanket which I can't decide whether to give to a friend for her birthday, put a way and give to daughters boyfriend for Christmas as he's always pinching her or to lie it over the back of one of my sofa's in the lounge therefore keeping it for myself. I'm sure the decision will be made for me once it's finished. I also have far too many cross stitch projects on the go and a pair of knitted socks on the needles.

    1. I've just too many projects on the go I think. All the best with your blanket, I keep the Moorland one (attic24) draped over the back of the sofa. I love to look at it. I also have several Cross stitch projects on the go too, I just didn't add those to the list, lol. Cx

  11. Such pretty flowers! Looks like you're making great progress on your projects. I had another slow weekend, just resting from the week and trying to get back to 100% after being sick. Hopefully, this will be a productive week. Hope you have a great week ahead!

  13. It's great that you have teenagers that help out around the house and garden. My husband and I have a garden project ready and waiting for local grandson during the Summer holidays in which a side hedge needs to be removed so that a small greenhouse can be constructed. Being a small plot there's never enough room in our garden for veg growing so things get re-arranged now and again.
You have quite a few knitting and crocheting projects there. It's nice to have different crafts on the go. Your characters for the festival are adorable. One project at a time for me and as I've mentioned before sometimes I pick up my crochet work and sometimes I like to read a chapter or two of a book.

  14. Thank you Linda, I think the gardening help novelty has worn thin for a while. We're growing rhubarb, gooseberries and strawberries - if we remember them before the birds eat them. I definitely need more focus to get things finished. One main project at a time, Cx

  15. Hello!
Such lovely projects you have going on there!
I am completely talent-less in that department!
I hope you are having a cozy Monday.
Warm but rainy here. : )

    1. There's a couple of Star Wars kits available now, this one I'd originally purchased from the book people with some other books. I've added the link above ('Star Wars kit') for amazon as they have other kits. In this kit, you can make the other characters on the box, you'd need to source your own materials for those. Cx
